- Ephemeral Rocket (Temporary Memorials)
What is monument?:
Definitions of Monument:
- a statue, building, or other structure erected to commemorate a famous or notable person or event.
|
- a statue or other structure placed by or over a grave in memory of the dead.
synonyms: gravestone, headstone, tombstone, grave marker, plaque
"a monument was placed over the grave" - a building, structure, or site that is of historical importance or interest.""
the amphitheater is one of the many Greek monuments in Sicily
Definition of Public Space-
A public space is a social space that is generally open and accessible to people. Roads (including the pavement), public squares, parks and beaches are typically considered public space. -Wikipedia
Definition of Cultural Memory-
Cultural memories are those transformative historical experiences that define a culture, even as time passes and it adapts to new influences. For oppressed peoples, cultural memory engenders the spirit of resistance; not surprisingly, some of its most powerful incarnations are rooted in religion.

Proposal: To Honor The Event of Hurricane Katrina and the Aftermath

Introduction:
A
memory is only as good as people can remember it and if history books or texts
can approve that it’s a good enough memory then maybe it will be remembered
forever. The possibility of creating physical pieces that lasts through the
test of time is the greatest invention, but can also be a downfall if the
meaning of the memory of “why” is lost.
But, to create a piece that incorporates life and the play of nature
after the results of nature’s wrath can really bring what it means to remember
a memory as memories are a part of life.
There
are several artificial coral reef sculptures, but the memory implied is of
individual things and individual people or quite simply to look pretty,
aesthetically. To take the idea of these
underwater sculptures and turn the idea of the event of Hurricane Katrina into
one big concept to tie into the true meaning of memory, is not singular, but
Background:
In
2005, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama got hit with a cyclone
named Hurricane Katrina. It was a devastating 100-140 wind per hour with a span
of 400 miles across. It had places below sea level and in others major
flooding. Nearly 2,000 people were killed and about 100 billion dollars in
damage.
Request for
a Piece of Commemoration:
Hurricane
Katrina is the most recent and most destructive event to hit home base U.S.A.
Today, people worry about the recent event of the Ebola virus, which hasn’t
killed nearly as much in the U.S. Hurricane Katrina did not come from
international countries, but an event that happened here on U.S. soil. It was
uncontrollable and in no way preconceived to happen. On the other hand, the
Ebola virus comes from across the ocean and could have been preconceived that
it came from a person who traveled from across the way to here in the U.S. It
could have been controlled more sufficiently, but the government decided that
it wasn’t a great threat. In the case of Hurricane Katrina, there were no
decisions to be made, until it hit the U.S. hard and fast. It killed many
people and left people scarred for life, as well as damaged the ecosystem of
the Gulf Coast.
Hurricane
Katrina became an integral part of the nation’s history because it was a trying
time of cultural awareness of how fast our communities and our government can
react to a natural disaster of this scale. This event needs to be remembered in
a way that it’s not just about the individuals who died, the people who
survived, who helped in recovery, etc. It’s about remembering what a home is
and how fickle the materialistic idea of home is. Home is deeper than the wood
or the dry wall, it’s about the country as a whole and how a natural disaster
can pull people together and also make people realize how precious life really
is. In honor of this drastic event, there should be a commemoration of this
part of U.S. history.
Description:
The
proposition lies with the construction of a solid material (pH neutral
concrete) replica of 4 broken houses, they will become artificial coral reefs.
They will be placed in the coral reefs within states of Florida, Louisiana,
Mississippi, and Alabama to represent each state. The houses will not represent
just a specific area, but as a whole of all the damage between each state and
what came after/during Hurricane Katrina. The people who were affected and how the
ecosystem has been affected can be represented as a permanent memory. This
sculpture will also allow marine life to grow and thrive on the sculpture. It
will not only be a memorial, but an integrated part of the once damaged
ecosystem. It will become part of the
earth.
For
those who want to go to the sites via diving physically into the water and
getting closer looks will be permitted when projects are submerged. The sculptures will be lined up in a row from Louisiana towards Alabama. It will be come a tour route for divers and it will start from New Orleans. Those unable to visit
sites will be compensated via live feeds of progress and a web domain will be
available to view pictures from sites, including those that are personally
submitted to the site as well as a underwater tour video.
Destroyed Homes:
Project 3: Radical Cartography
Processessing and Concepts:
The idea is to map out a directory of deaths, suicides, and missing soldiers from Fort Riley, Kansas within the installation and directly outside of it. The map will be of terrain features; including roads and major buildings. Terrain features will be from google earth and placed on a flat representation of Fort Riley's borders. The idea is to place a legend based representation of deaths, suicides, and the missing soldiers which is color coded or maybe represented by symbols, and or possibly both. The whole concept is to get the viewer to look closely in the inside while looking out. By taking a general knowledge of how the military works and then viewing the true identity of the military, ultimately the military members. There are internal processes within a military member's mind that differentiate between "civilian" minds.
This concept is a part of me that I hold dear and can attests to, especially with my experiences in the military. I truly believe that the real war is within the nation's borders and lies almost solely within a military member's overall mental health and stability which then could turn into death. With this representation of deaths, suicides, and missing soldiers I can engage the viewer in looking at the bigger picture. The world needs to understand that although military service men and women are human too, there are different processes and individual development put into play.
FINAL PRODUCT:
I ended up creating a comparison between veteran suicides, military casualties in OIF (Operation Iraqi Freedom), civilian suicides. I wanted to heighten awareness that not many deaths are happening in war, but at the home front. People fail to realize that when people go into the military, it's not a temporary change of job, but also change of life. It's not during the military that is difficult to go through, but what happens after. The things that veterans go through in their military life can never go away whereas in the civilian world, most suicides come from temporary problems.

Project 2: Augmented Body
PROCESS:I began to think of animals capabilities and how some of their instinctual abilities come into play that are or can be a superior to us because of our free will to do on our own whereas nature is uncontrollable and therefore animals run off an already generated embedded plan of action rather than will. So I began to plot out specific animals by their keen senses on a human diagram. (Excuse the bad representation of the human body) Such as an elephants olfactory senses, a cat's regenerative properties in it's purr, bird's eye perspectives, etc. I also implemented already researched technology ideas, but actually implementing in full effect in the human body in a certain way. Then chose only a couple of animals and or technology based items.
FINAL:

How owls can see in the day and at night.
Eagle Eyes
16 photoreceptors of a mantis shrimp.
Geckskin adhesive product.
Using carbon nanotubes for synthetic skins.
Noise cancellation product.
We as humans are always trying to
figure out what we can do to make ourselves the better, the faster, and the
smarter of the animal kingdom. Instead of looking for new ideas, why not focus
on the continuous study of the different species of organisms and learn what
they are capable of that could also benefit the human way of life. We are not
at the primal stage where we were the hunters and gatherers, where we had to
hone our skills in instinct and precise execution on one sole purpose of
survival. In today's time, we are only striving to harvest intellectual ideals
and scientific achievements to either create a possibly distant
"peace" amongst ourselves or to create destructive chaos, which
eventually will end our own existence. In the end, nature knows best and we can
only learn from nature, from that we can take advantage of technology.
When given a problem of choosing my own
specifications for my own body, I choose to gain knowledge from nature and use
the knowledge gained to synthesize an enhancement of the senses with the
exception of olfactory. My sight will have a day and night time shift, where
light can be reflected or absorbed. My idea for this came from owls, where owls
either had yellow or darker colored eyes (brown or black). The different
colored eyes indicated that yellowed eyed owls are more accustomed during the
day and the dark eyed owls are accustomed to the night. On top of that, I would
have an eagle's sharp eyes and a mantis shrimp's photoreceptors. The sharp eyes
are to capture what are in the distance and more photo receptors to see
ultraviolet, for protection. My skin will have carbon nanotubes infused into
the skin to create a flexible surface for cuts and scrapes to heal faster. The
idea for that came from the current study of nano tubes and synthetic skin
testing for aging. Also for skin, I want to have more reliable tactile
capabilities on my fingers. The idea came from the current invention of
Geckskin, a strong adhesive pad. This would enable a "super" grip
especially for hazardous slips and falls. I've included padding on the palm.
There should be a layer of fat just under the epidermis of the palm, enabling
protection from the cold. As for hearing, I would like to enhance my hearing to
have true selective hearing, by cutting out certain sounds. The idea for this
came from a product called Sono, a sound-canceling device that can be placed on
a window or wall to cancel out certain sounds. Overall, my conclusions can be
applied since there is already evident products or executions being created all
in the name of what was learned from the natural world and what is already
implemented in technology.
The biggest push of merging what is
natural and what is technology is a great conflict in it by itself. I do
foresee with anything dealing with changing the human body to more or less than
what it is can hinder the line between good or evil. Advances of the human race
could result in super human hybrids or more failed chimera experimentation.
Like with everything, religion and politics always has to try to play a key
role in what is humane and what is a good use to military power. By me merely
having amazing eyesight, I can be subject to human experimentation or used as a
super soldier. Or the worse be feared and hunted down like a monster. In the
end there are always plenty of advantages in being super human, but there are
worse consequences as well.
